Our Backpacking 101 Class introduces you to all you need to know to be able to hit the trail for multiple days so that you can extend your adventure, access remote locations and experience natural wonders beyond those that a dayhike affords. Topics include trip planning, gear review and selection, meal planning and everything else you need to know to embark on your first backpacking trip! Age 8+.
During this fun and informative workshop, learn about the history and current uses of cast iron and Dutch oven cookery, how to choose and care for a Dutch oven and, most importantly, how to use various ingredients to create delicious camp meals perfect for sharing. Class will include a demonstration of how to cook a one pot meal, bake scrumptious cobblers and breads, and other delights. Cap off the day with a group meal and you have the perfect ending to your outdoor culinary experience! No experience needed.
Join hammock camping expert Debbie Briscoe as she teaches you all you need to know to join the growing ranks of those who choose to camp above the ground! You'll learn about the most up-to-date materials, designs and brands, as well as how to properly outfit and hang your rig for maximal portability and comfort. Participants are encouraged to bring a camp chair to class and be prepared to take an easy stroll through the woods where Debbie will have hammocks set up for demonstration and for everyone to try. Age 10+.
Are you looking for a true adventure that will take you to one of the prettiest areas in Northeast Tennessee? We are excited to introduce our latest outdoor offering: our Kayak Overnight Adventure! Join our kayak and camping instructors as they take you on a paddle tour of the mountain-ringed emerald green waters of Watauga Lake and then make camp along the shoreline to spend the night among the stars. We limit group size to 8 to maximize everyone's enjoyment and minimize our footprint. Kayak, paddle and life jacket provided. Age 10+.
Northeast Tennessee and the Appalachian Highlands are well-known for their beauty, much of it easily accessible and only a short drive away. Among the best ways to experience this natural splendor is its expansive network of hiking trails. NOLI is now offering free instructor-led day hikes to some of these gems and are open to anyone wishing to join in the fun. Hikes vary in length and difficulty but most are in the 4-6 mile range and are mild to moderate in difficulty. Registration required. Minimum age is 8. Minors must be accompanied by parent.
Learn how to use your kayak to reach beautiful locations to camp that you can only reach by boat. Join kayak instructor and kayak camping regular Debbie Briscoe on the banks of Watauga Lake reviewing what gear you'll need, how to pack it, keep it dry and make it all fit. She will also provide useful tips on how to eat in style by learning the best way to prepare, transport and cook delicious camp meals with ease. Participants can bring their own boat and camping gear if they would like but not required. There is no actual kayaking during this class. Age 10+.
