Structured similarly to our Flatwater Kayak Fun Day, the Flatwater Kayak Instructional goes into greater detail on the boats, equipment, fundamentals, strokes, safety considerations and boat handling techniques that will help both those with no experience who are interested in getting into the sport and more experienced paddlers interested in taking their paddling to the next level.
This one-day course allows participants to experience the excitement of whitewater kayaking. Under the guidance of one of our exceptional instructors you wil learn the fundamentals and techniques in the morning on flatwater that will help you safely enjoy a mild whitewater river trip in the afternoon. No experience required and all equipment provided.
Whether you’re a paddler wanting to increase your comfort on class 3 water or a solid class 3 boater looking to take it to the next level this one-day course will help you get there. Learn to paddle smarter and more confidently as you spend the day on one of the area’s class 3 rivers working on improving fundamentals, boat control and river running technique. Spend several consecutive days immersing yourself in the joy of kayaking as you work with an instructor to take your paddling to the next level on one or more of the region’s beautiful rivers. Class 2+/3 skills or greater and a reliable roll required.
Have a pretty good pool roll but an iffy river roll? This class gives paddlers an opportunity to improve their Combat Roll skill in a safe, controlled, and focused environment. Instruction will be given on skills and techniques to improve your roll on flat water, and then reliably execute it in moving water while paddling downriver. Participants must have at least Class 2+ skills and bring their own gear.
Are you beyond the beginner stage and want to spend more time developing the fundamentals, strokes and river moves that will allow you to become more comfortable on moving water? The Novice Whitewater Kyayak Class will help you get there! Spend the day with one of our instructors who will take the time to help you safely achieve your goals so that you can more confidently enjoy your time on the river. Whether you want to learn to roll for the first time or improve an existing roll this 2-hour class will help you build the proper technique and confidence to hit your roll when it counts. Basic kayaking skills. Classes offered by request in addition to regularly scheduled classes.
Looking to expand your boating to the fine creeks of the Southeast US? Then join our instructors as they lead you on a fun-filled day on a class 3/4 creek working on the techniques that will help you thread your lines and get your boof on! Strong class 3 skills and a reliable roll is required. This course is often scheduled short notice depending on river levels so check back regularly.
Want to take your creeking to the next level? Then join our instructors as they lead you on one of the region’s more advanced creeks working on the techniques that will help you become proficient in steeper, more technical rapids. Strong class 4 skills and a bombproof roll is required. These courses are often scheduled last minute depending on river levels so check back regularly.
Knowing how to roll and knowing how to teach the roll are two different things. This 3 hour class teaches the fundamentals and techniques that will help you effectively teach others the art of the roll. For experienced paddlers from novice up.
Join one of our instructors for a half-day flatwater paddle on one of the region’s beautiful lakes. Upon arriving you will be fitted to one of our touring kayaks and learn how to safely and efficiently paddle your boat before embarking on an enjoyable trip to an island for lunch before returning. Family-friendly and suitable for all ages 7+ and 4' tall+.

Our core class for first-timers and those new to whitewater, the two-day Beginner Whitewater Kayak Course allows participants to experience the thrill of whitewater kayaking while providing more detail and greater opportunity for skill development than our one-day class. No experience necessary and all equipment provided.
Want to become a whitewater kayak instructor and improve your own paddling in the process? Join Robin Pope and Scott Fisher for this 40 hour course reviewing and polishing fundamental paddling skills while learning methods to both teach new kayak students and improve skills of more experienced kayakers. Instructor candidates receive instruction and feedback on teaching methods, paddling skills, group management, rescue skills, and risk management principles. Note: class is 5 days in length over 2 weekends; dates in registration reflect the first weekend only. Fulll dates are in the course description.
ACA instructors can Update or Upgrade their cert either by participating in a portion of one of our L4 instructor courses or by request. Updates, required every 4 years to maintain certification, serve as opportunities to share teaching ideas, to describe changes in ACA policy, and to assess instructor skills. Upgrades provide current ACA instructors with the opportunity to become certified at a higher level by participating in an ICE or after appropriate review by an ACA IT or ITE in their discipline. Kick off the paddling season with a bang with our comprehensive and fun Spring Tune-Up. After a review of fundamentals and strokes to revisit solid technique and loosen those torsos up, we'll spend the majority of the day on one of the area's class 2/2+ rivers working on the river running skills that serve as a paddler's bread and butter. Already been paddling through the winter? This class is a great way to take your paddling up a notch as well.
The Southeast is known for some of the finest and most abundant creeks in the country. If you're interested in expanding to these tighter and more technical rivers, but would like to learn and apply creeking techniques on a regular river first before committing to an actual creek, our Creeking Transitional class is the solution This class is held on a class 3 river but we approach it like we're running a creek, focusing on fine boat control, holding tight lines, catching micro eddies, using river features and, of course, launching the occasional boof! This class is also a great option for any class 3+ paddler looking to step up their game.
Are you looking for a true adventure that will take you to one of the prettiest areas in Northeast Tennessee? We are excited to introduce our latest outdoor offering: our Kayak Overnight Adventure! Join our kayak and camping instructors as they take you on a paddle tour of the mountain-ringed emerald green waters of Watauga Lake and then make camp along the shoreline to spend the night among the stars.
