This is for you if: You want a comprehensive introduction to kayaking.

There's little better than an enjoyable day kayaking on a beautiful lake. Pair that with an outstanding instructor and a stunning mountain backdrop and you have all the ingredients for a truly memorable day. Join us for a half-day introduction to flatwater kayaking on one of Northeast Tennessee's most spectacular waterways, Watauga Lake.

Upon arriving you will be greeted by your instructor who will give you an overview of the day, a review of flatwater kayaks and gear, and a safety briefing. You will then be fitted to one of our top-of-the line recreational kayaks, a life jacket and paddle and make your way to the water's edge, where your instructor will make sure you are comfortable and properly outfitted in your boat.  

Next the real fun begins as you launch into a protected cove where you will get the chance to review fundamentals, learn basic strokes and practice maneuvering under the expert guidance of your instructor. Cap it off with an enjoyable trip on the vibrant blue green waters of Watauga Lake before paddling back to where we started to wrap up a great day on the water.

Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

  • Prerequisites

    • Be comfortable on open water
    • Possess a level of health and fitness commensurate with paddling a kayak for 30-45 mins without stopping and 2 hours total
    • Participants must wear a PFD (personal flotation device) while on the water
    • 7+ years old; children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult

  • Includes

  • What to Bring

    Swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, wicking type shirt for wear on the water, water shoes or shoes you don't mind getting wet, drinking water or sports drink, bagged lunch (we will give you a dry bag to put it in), camp chair, rain jacket (weather dependent)

  • Meeting Location

    We will meet at Watauga Point Recreation Area/Picnic Area near Hampton, TN by the pavilion.

  • Additional Information

    Camping is available close by at Cardens Bluff Campground  and Boot's Off Campground and Hostel. The closest hotels are in Elizabethton, TN, approximately 20 minutes away. Lodging and camping is also available at our outpost on the Nolichucky River (about 45 mins away) and can be reserved directly with either USA Raft  or Nolichucky Gorge Campground.

    I certify that all registrants meet course prerequisites as defined in the course description, meet the minimum age requirements and do not have any medical conditions or limitations that would prevent their ability to safely participate in the activity.

  • Cancellation policy

    NOLI activities go rain or shine. If you cancel or decrease the number of participants in your party the following applies:

    Cancellations 30 or more days prior to your activity will receive a full refund.
    Cancellations 14-29 days prior to the activity date will receive a full reservation booking voucher.
    Cancellations 0-13 days prior to the activity date are not extended a refund or voucher.
    No Shows are not extended a refund or voucher.
