This is for you if: You want to become intimately familiar with the Nolichucky Gorge.

The Nolichucky Gorge has long been one of the Southeast's most iconic rivers. Although Helene changed the river forever, the river remains a world-class paddling destination with its high-quality class 3/4 rapids and beautiful setting bringing whitewater paddlers from near and far. Spend the day with one of our exceptional instructors learning every new rapid, line, surf spot and hidden gem known best by those who know the updated river better than anyone. Our instructors have a combined 100+ years (yes, 100+) on the Nolichucky Gorge and have explored every nook and cranny in its current form. They will take the time to show you conventional and alternate lines, discuss routes, identify potential hazards and scout whenever necessary. They will also be happy to provide you with tips on technique if you'd like to help you get the most out the day and take your paddling to the next level. This is the ultimate Noli Gorge beta experience, and not just for first-timers. It's also a great way for those who have already paddled the Gorge to dial it in even more.

For experienced whitewater kayakers with class 3+ or greater skills and a bombproof combat roll. Students are required to bring their own boat and gear.

    • Beta on rapids, lines, surf spots, hazards and more
    • Descriptions tailored to you - we'll provide you with as much or as little detail as you'd like

  • Prerequisites

    • Class 3 or greater whitewater kayak skills
    • A combat roll - you will be asked to demonstrate your roll at the put-in and in current
    • Very good overall health and fitness
    • Be able to wet exit and swim to shore in current in the event of a capsize
    • Participants must be willing to wear a PFD (personal flotation device) and helmet while on the water

  • What to Bring

    Whitewater kayak, paddle, PFD, helmet, sprayskirt, drinking water, closed-toe water shoes (open-toed footwear, sandals not permitted), throw rope, suitable clothing for wear on the water (wicking, non-cotton base layers, paddle tops or drysuits as appropriate), breakdown paddle (recommended, stored in boat), lunch in drybag, towel, sunscreen.

  • Additional Information

    Food and lodging are the responsibility of participants. Lodging is available at Uncle Johnny's in Erwin, Woodsmoke Campground in Unicoi, Rock Creek Campground in Erwin (open May-Oct), Grand View Ranch Campground in Unicoi, Blackberry Blossom Campground in Unicoi and Nature's Inn Hostel and Cabins in Flag Pond, TN. The closest hotel is a Super 8 in Erwin and there are hotels in Johnson City as well (20-30 minutes away).

    I certify that all registrants meet course prerequisites as defined in the course description, meet the minimum age requirements and do not have any medical conditions or limitations that would prevent their ability to safely participate in the activity.

  • Cancellation policy

    NOLI activities go rain or shine. If you cancel or decrease the number of participants in your party the following applies:

    Cancellations 30 or more days prior to your activity will receive a full refund.
    Cancellations 14-29 days prior to the activity date will receive a full reservation booking voucher.
    Cancellations 0-13 days prior to the activity date are not extended a refund or voucher.
    No Shows are not extended a refund or voucher.
