Overview & Highlights

This is for you if: You want private flatwater kayak instruction led by one of our exceptional instructors.

We can schedule private flatwater kayak instruction for you and your group upon request tailored to your interests and needs. Classes typically run 4 hours although we can accommodate longer durations as well. Your instructor will start where you are in your paddling progression and build from there so that you can safely achieve your goals in a supportive environment and get the most out of your time on the water. Primary venue is Watauga Lake near Hampton, TN.

Private instruction is suitable for all skill levels, from beginner through advanced, and includes kayak and gear as needed. All instructors carry professional certification through the ACA.

1 Person - $225
2-3 People -$175
4-5 People - $140

Participants can either bring their own kayak and equipment or we can outfit you with one of our Wilderness Systems kayaks, paddles and PFDs.

  • What to Expect

    • Learn/review flatwater kayak anatomy, types and proper outfitting
    • Learn/review types and uses of necessary and recommended equipment
    • Learn/review safety considerations, practices and rules of the water
    • Learn and practice kayaking fundamentals and strokes with regular instructor feedback
    • Enjoy a flatwater paddle on a beautiful lake while continuing to refine paddling technique
    • Have fun!

  • Prerequisites

    • Be comfortable on open water
    • Possess a level of health and fitness commensurate with paddling a kayak for 30-45 mins without stopping and 2-3 hours total
    • Participants must wear a PFD (personal flotation device) while on the water

  • Includes

    • Guiding/instruction
    • Top-of-the-line recreational kayak (as needed)
    • Paddle (as needed)
    • Life jacket (PFD)
    • Dry bag
    • Guided paddle tour 

  • What to Bring

    Swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, wicking type shirt for wear on the water, water shoes or shoes you don't mind getting wet, drinking water or sports drink, bagged lunch (we will give you a dry bag to put it in), camp chair, rain jacket (weather dependent); kayak, paddle and PFD if you have them (otherwise we will provide them)

  • Meeting Location

    We will meet at Watauga Point Recreation Area near Hampton, TN by the pavilion.

  • Additional Information

    Camping is available close by at Cardens Bluff Campground  and Boot's Off Campground and Hostel. The closest hotels are in Elizabethton, TN, approximately 20 minutes away.

    I certify that all registrants meet course prerequisites as defined in the course description, meet the minimum age requirements and do not have any medical conditions or limitations that would prevent their ability to safely participate in the activity.

  • Cancellation policy

    NOLI activities go rain or shine. If you cancel or decrease the number of participants in your party the following applies:

    Cancellations 30 or more days prior to your activity will receive a full refund.
    Cancellations 14-29 days prior to the activity date will receive a full reservation booking voucher.
    Cancellations 0-13 days prior to the activity date are not extended a refund or voucher.
    No Shows are not extended a refund or voucher.
