Do you feel a connection to the natural world and want to play a role in helping to protect it for generations to come? If so, the two-day Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor Course is a great step in the right direction.

Participants taking the two-day Level 1 Instructor Course learn Leave No Trace skills, ethics, and techniques for educating others about these low-impact practices. Leave No Trace Instructor Courses are a vital component of the national Leave No Trace program. It is designed for educators, guides, agency employees, other outdoor professionals and anyone interested in learning more about minimum impact skills and ethics and how to help educate others.

Research has shown that:
  1. LNT Instructor Courses significantly improve participants knowledge and understanding of Leave No Trace skills and ethics
  2. LNT course participants report a change in behavior consistent with Leave No Trace skills and ethics
  3. 94% of Instructor Course participants go on to teach Leave No Trace after the course
This course covers the Seven Principles of Leave No Trace as well as techniques for disseminating these low impact skills. The main objective of this course is to train attendees on how to model and present the ethics to others. Various teaching methods will be introduced and discussed, and each participant will have the opportunity to present one or more of the principles to the class using innovative and engaging approaches.

Upon successful completion, participants will become a certified Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor, will receive a completion certificate from Leave No Trace and will be equipped to:
  • Understand, demonstrate, and teach state-of-the-art minimum impact techniques for friends, family, or community groups
  • Lead a discussion on outdoor ethics and help others explore their own personal outdoor ethic
  • Lead Leave No Trace Skills Courses and provide Certificates of Completion
  • Lead Leave No Trace Workshops and provide Certificates of Completion
  • Serve as a co-instructor for in-person Level 1 Instructor Courses with a qualified Level 2 Instructor

The course features both classroom and backcountry instruction and application. Age 16+.

    Clothing appropriate for extended periods outside, hiking shoes, rain jacket (weather dependent), drinking water or sports drink, bagged lunch, camp chair, notepad, pen, daypack (optional).

    We will meet at the Rocky Fork State Park Ranger Station. Directions can be found here.
  • Additional Information

    Lodging and camping in the immediate vicinity are limited but there are a number of options within 20-45 minutes. There are primitive camp sites at Rocky Fork SP but they do not have facilities and require hiking in from the trailhead (~1-2 miles).  Camping with amenities is available at Woodsmoke Campground in Unicoi (~20 minutes away),  Uncle Johnny's Hostel in Erwin (~15 minutes away), Rock Creek Campground in Erwin (roughly 20-25 minutes away, open May-Oct), Grand View Ranch Campground in Unicoi (~35 mins away) and Blackberry Blossom Campground in Unicoi (~40-45 minutes away). Another option is Inner Wolf Retreat  in Mars Hill (20-25 minutes away). The closest hotel is a Super 8 in Erwin (15-20 minutes away) and there are hotels in Johnson City as well (35-45 minutes away).

    I certify that all registrants meet course prerequisites as defined in the course description, meet the minimum age requirements and do not have any medical conditions or limitations that would prevent their ability to safely participate in the activity.
  • Cancellation policy

    NOLI activities go rain or shine. If you cancel or decrease the number of participants in your party the following applies:

    Cancellations 30 or more days prior to your activity will receive a full refund.
    Cancellations 14-29 days prior to the activity date will receive a full reservation booking voucher.
    Cancellations 0-13 days prior to the activity date are not extended a refund or voucher.
    No Shows are not extended a refund or voucher.
