This is for you if: You want private survival instruction customized for you and your group.

Want to do something truly memorable and fun with family, friends or co-workers? Contact us and we will put together a custom wilderness skills course tailored to your group that you will be talking about for years to come. Join our survival instructors as you and your group engage in a unique outdoor experience learning skills such as shelter building, fire starting, knot tying, land navigation and much more. Great for team building, skill development or just creating lasting memories.

Training is generally held at our rustic camp on Survival Island located just off our outpost on the Nolichucky River. We use a handline to cross the shallow creek to reach camp which is always a fun way to begin and end class. Training is led by former Ranger-qualified Army officer Scott Fisher who has been teaching wilderness skills for decades. All equipment provided. No experience necessary. Minimum age is flexible for custom training. Contact us to schedule your custom event.

Pricing is based on number of participants:

  • 1 person - $375 per day
  • 2-3 people - $225 per person per day
  • 4+ people - $150 per person per day
  • Special pricing available for larger groups. Contact us for more information

Wilderness Survival - Small Group & Custom Training

  • What to Expect

    Content varies according to the interests and requests of your group. Common topics include:


    • Familiarize participants with the causes of survival situations and ways to prevent them
    • Identify what we need to survive
    • Review suggested items to carry when heading to the backcountry or your local trail
    • Learn the 7 Priorities of Survival 
    • Practice survival skills such as shelter building, knot tying, knife use, fire making, signaling and water procurement
    • Team building activities 
  • Prerequisites

    • Good overall health and fitness
    • Able to walk across a shallow creek using a handline for support
    • Participants should dress appropriately for weather and temperature
  • Includes

    • Custom wilderness skills training 
    • All equipment including knives, fire starting tools, shelter material, cordage, etc 
  • What to Bring

    ​​​​Closed-toe water shoes or an extra pair of shoes you don't mind getting wet (you will use these to cross a creek and then put on you regular shoes), towel, clothing appropriate for extended periods outside, rain jacket (weather dependent), drinking water or sports drink, bagged lunch, day pack (optional, may be helpful in carrying personal items to camp).

  • Meeting Location

    We will meet at USA Raft by the NOLI boat shed. Directions can be found here. When driving onto the property stay to your right and look for a shed with the NOLI sign on the side across from the restrooms.

  • Additional Information

    Food and  lodging are the responsibility of participants. Riverside lodging and camping is available onsite and can be reserved directly with either USA Raft or Nolichucky Gorge Campground.

  • Terms and conditions

    I certify that all registrants meet course prerequisites as defined in the course description, meet the minimum age requirements and do not have any medical conditions or limitations that would prevent their ability to safely participate in the activity.

  • Cancellation policy

    NOLI activities go rain or shine. If you cancel or decrease the number of participants in your party the following applies:


    Cancellations 30 or more days prior to your activity will receive a full refund.

    Cancellations 14-29 days prior to the activity date will receive a full reservation booking voucher.

    Cancellations 0-13 days prior to the activity date are not extended a refund or voucher.

    No Shows are not extended a refund or voucher.
